Stan Natchez is a Shoshoni/Paiute Indian
who was born on November 14, 1954 in Los
Angeles, California. Stan is known for his
innovative and creative paintings. Inspired by
Andy Warhol, Jasper Johnsand, T.C. Cannon
and other Pop artists, his paintings exude the
power of colour and familiar objects.
His canvases often begin directly with artifacts
of American culture that either directly or
indirectly reflects Indians, eg. white mans land
title deeds and ledgers etc. He then includes
figures such as Native Americans, mission
priests or cowboys on horseback. Intricate
ìstars and stripesî beadwork add texture to
bold works that emanate beauty and joy.
Fabrics and goldleaf layering add another
dimension to his work as does his use of sand
for form and texture. Stan uses dollar bills
layered on the canvas as a modern dayhide.
He says ìI feel fortunate for having been raised
in the city because of the perspective it gave me on modern life. However, without an awareness of our traditional heritage, we as Native
Americans have no identity. By taking the best of both worlds the modern and the traditional, we
are better able to find balance in our livesî.
