Four Winds Gallery is proud to present renowned Zuni artists, Jovanna Poblano and Daniel Chattin, for their first exhibition in Australia.
This award winning husband and wife talent create exquisite necklaces and refined fetishes carved in gem grade turquoise, mother of pearl, coral and sugilite.
Jovanna's maternal grandfather, Leo Poblano (1905 - 1959), the famous mosaicist from Zuni and her mother, master jeweller Veronica Poblano, set the stage for her artistic debut 25 years ago. Jovanna was always interested in beading and this, along with her necklaces, characterises her blend of modern eclecticism.
Jovanna Poblano's source of inspiration comes from the deep spiritual bond with her ancestors - this being the foundation on which her creative energy rests.
Daniel Chattin has been working for 15 years. His close friend, Stuart Quandelacy, has been a major influence in his work. Jovanna and Daniel incorporate their skills by combining beading and carving. They focus on gem grade quality materials, particularly turquoise, but also combine cut beads, coral, carnelian, malachite and lapis in their pieces. In Jovanna's capable fingers these materials radiate passion and a strong sense of romance. Even today they meditate, think of and 'talk to' Jovanna's grandfather to totally grasp the energy of the materials and source inspiration.
Jovanna and Daniel won first place at the Northern Museum of Arizona in 1996 with a corn maiden carving beaded necklace. Corn maidens and the corn mothers represent a caregiver and protection. Corn maidens are frequently used in their necklaces and fetishes along with the dragonfly symbol. Jovanna and Daniel's abstract and symmetrical designs glisten with colour and light, making their art a joy to look at and very desirable for any collection.
