Denise brings a collection of her and her husband Samuel’s internationally acclaimed jewellery, including a selection of jewellery by their award winning daughter Dawn Wallace.
The jewellery features exquisitely carved fossilized walrus tusk set in finely worked silver and gold.
The transformative power contained in the ancient stories of the Arctic native peoples seems to have reached across the centuries to find expression in the lives and works of the Wallace family.
Master jewellers whose pieces depict icons and legends inspired by Old Bering Sea culture, the Wallaces possess an almost mystical ability to wrest continuity from disparate elements – gold and silver, culture and design, desert silver inlaid with fossil ivory, the deep blue lapis lazuli beside the swirling green of malacite.

The jewellery of Denise and Samuel Wallace can be appreciated for its exquisitely crafted objects of art, as a window into the culture of the Arctic people and as visual stories with the motif of transformation. Combining their respective expertise in metalwork and lapidary, Denise,
a Chugach (Eskimo) Aleut, born in 1957, and her non-native husband, Samuel, born in 1936, create wearable art.

The physical and spiritual world of the Arctic peoples provide a wealth of literal and metaphorical images for Denise, “I think of myself as a storyteller, my grandmother used to tell me stories and today, I remember them when I am planning and sketching a
piece.”
The Arctic people believe the animals, whales, bears, walrus and seals, in fact all living creatures contain a Yua (its double) – the name comes from Central Yup’ik Eskimos of Alaska, whose art is the Wallaces major source of inspiration – that is capable of taking on different forms.

Transformation defines the Wallaces jewellery: Hinged doors open to reveal surprises, stories are contained within stories, faces peek from behind masks, a woman becomes the moon, a man becomes a bear.
Furthermore, the pieces themselves transform: a belt component becomes a pin or pendant and pendants become earrings. The works of Denise and Samuel Wallace are presented in surprising detail in the book Arctic Transformations: ‘The Jewellery of Denise and Samuel Wallace’ by Lois Sherr Dubin.
